Kootenai County Sheriff's Office wants to welcome the newest member to their team, canine Axo!
K9 Axo is a three year old Dutch Shepard and comes from Cougar Creek K9. Deputy Jason Shaw will be Axo's partner and handler.
Deputy Shaw has been with the Sheriff's Office since 1996 and a handler for the last 16 years. Deputy Shaw was most recently partners with
K9 Bari who passed away this spring.
K9 Axo is being trained as a dual purpose patrol canine. K9 Axo has already certified in drug detection and is currently in training for
patrol work, which includes tracking, suspect apprehension, and evidence detection. Kootenai County now has 6 canines trained for
apprehension, drug detection and explosives between our Sheriff Offices and Adult Misdemeanor Probation teams.
The justice services building and courthouse is receiving upgrades to be more ADA complaint.
ADA improvements are continuing at the Kootenai County Fair ground in an effort to make the fairgrounds more accessible to those with
New Evidence Storage
New storage space is being created for evidence storage.
Shared Parking at the Downtown County Campus
The County and the city of Coeur d'Alene arranged for shared parking on the west side of NW Boulevard across from the County Admin and
Courthouse Campus. This parking will be used to service larger jury pools and employee parking for the downtown County Campus.
Solid Waste Department
Fighting Creek Landfill Closure Turf Project
We are currently capping and covering over 16 acres of old landfill area with a closure-turf material. This project is anticipated to
be complete in late July 2018.
Fighting Creek Landfill Perimeter Road and Cell Berm Buildout
Development of a soil borrow source and construction of the perimeter road and berm for the future lined landfill Cells #3 and #4.
Project is anticipated to be complete by October 2018.
Rose Lake Rural Solid Waste Collection Site
There is a new site in development for household waste collection in the Rose Lake area. Project is anticipated to be complete
by July 2018.
Parks and Waterways
Renovation of McGuire Park is currently underway. Improvements to the park will include an expanded parking area, new information kiosk
and new fencing.
Mowry Park on Lake Coeur d'Alene
We just completed construction and installation of 3400 square feet of new docks with an encapsulated swim area and floating restroom
building. This project includes a state of the art design utilizing steel floatation and concrete decking that should last in excess of 40
years. We were able to build this $425,000 project using no general fund tax dollars.
Harrison Breakwater Replacement Project
We will soon be going out to bid on the Harrison Breakwater Replacement Project. Phase 1 of the project will address the construction of
a 6,000 square feet wave attenuation structure necessary to protect the City of Harrison shoreline, a private marina, and the County's
largest public marina with an estimated replacement cost of $2,000,000. This project utilizes four separate recreational grants to fund
Phase 1. No general fund tax dollars will be used.
We just completed noxious weed spray activities on all County owned properties as required by Idaho Code to include: Solid Waste, KCSO, P&W,
Fairgrounds, Airport, Cataldo flood mitigation properties and Cataldo levy.
The managing spray contractor is scheduled to complete roadside spraying for the four highway districts and municipalities:
Lakes Highway District, East Side Highway District, Worley Highway District, Post Falls Highway District, City of Athol, City of
Coeur d'Alene, and City of Harrison.
