During Service

Parking

Jurors may park in the lot across from the Old Courthouse and Justice Building on Garden Avenue

A.D.A. Accommodations

Handicapped parking is available in the small parking lot immediately west of the Old Courthouse. Wheelchairs can be accommodated in jury boxes. A system to aid hearing-impaired individuals is in place in each jury courtroom.

No Smoking Allowed

All court buildings are non-smoking facilities, and jurors are required to exit the building for smoking breaks. Serving jurors will be accompanied by their bailiff for smoke breaks.

Orientation & Day One

Jury service for Kootenai County is on an on-call basis for a one-week term. The first day of service includes an orientation beginning normally at 8:30 a.m. Information regarding jury duty will be provided through a film and other introductory remarks. Selection of jurors for the trial begins after orientation. Jurors are instructed to call the Jury Commissioner's office each night after 4 p.m. for the rest of their term of service to determine which days they need to report for selection again.

Day Length

Court sessions generally run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (excluding orientation day). A jury in deliberation may go well into the evening hours. There are daily one-hour breaks for lunch, and usually a break each morning and each afternoon.

Delay in Process

There are time delays in court sessions, so you should be prepared to wait. If we know about delays, we will keep you informed. You may wish to bring a book or other reading material to read during those breaks. However, the courts request that jurors neither listen to nor read any media publications or accounts regarding any court cases.
