Barry McHugh

Barry McHugh was sworn in as the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney on January 12, 2009. Barry supervises 36 employees. In the Criminal Division, his employees are responsible for prosecuting all Kootenai county cases involving felony offenses, juvenile diversion, child protective actions and mental commitments. The office is also responsible for prosecuting all misdemeanor offenses occurring outside the cities of Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, and Rathdrum. Each of those cities has their own prosecutors for misdemeanor offenses. The Civil Division provides counsel and represents all Kootenai County elected officials and departments.

Prior to becoming Kootenai County's Prosecuting Attorney he worked in private practice as a partner in a local law firm, and as a prosecutor for the City of Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, the State of Idaho, and the United States Department of Justice.

Family Life
Barry is a native of Coeur d'Alene. His family has a long history of community activity, including his father John McHugh, who was on the Coeur d'Alene City Council and was the mayor from 1968 until 1972. He is married and has three children. He is active in his church and community organizations.
